I feel confident that the CMC can't be older than 12 in Growing Up is Hard to Do based on their naivete. One could argue it comes out of order though, so it might not represent them in their penultimate episode. Timeline is important in the shows with continuity. MLP isn't like South Park or The Simpsons where all the characters haven't aged a day and some episodes of these shows were confirmed to take place in 1999, 2010, 2014, etc. (mainly in the year these episodes were made). (edited)

I have several gripes about both, but by and large, the finale was better than I expected it to be and the epilogue was tied up nicely.

I don't know how I feel about tall Twilicorn's design. I get what they were going for and appreciate the spirit of it, but I feel the execution could have been better and I'm not sure it was really necessary to such an extreme.

True as well. Considering the target demographic, I mean, I can't think of much to complain about story-wise. Like Scarlet said, it was tied up nicely. Silverstream's development feels a bit weak, but I also don't really mind that for the attention put on other characters.

I heard a few say it felt like it all happened so fast, but the pacing didn't feel that way to me, personally. 2 episodes seemed to be adequate for the finale-proper, and the encore managed to wedge in the coronation through flashbacks just fine. Of course more time has the potential to produce something even better, but I never expected it to be movie-length.

I think it was the perfect length for what it had to do.

Yeah. I don't like that that was the direction Hasbro took, though I think Twilight maturing into a "high-alicorn" or whatever you might call her was executed well (minus the design and her voice not changing). We had ample warning she was taking the throne. We've had seasons to watch her as a lower alicorn. (The S3 finale was just way too short.) I feel like a lot of flaws are forgivable thanks to the way the stories and development were wrapped up.

I prefer the term 'elder' alicorn when referring to the design itself. /shrug

As for Twilight taking the throne, I actually feel it drags down the entirety of her character arc.

Anyway that loss didn't impact the finale much. I was amused that the royal sisters actually seemed about as helpful without magic in the finale (with Starlight's aid) as they were with magic throughout the entire series.

Also, Celestia having only raised the sun for 1,111 years really fucks with that even more, because it means Luna has been banished for nearly 90% of her rule.

Celestia seems to reflect Nicole's personality quite a bit I think.

(Which, depending on your interpretation of other events in the series and if you think Luna was frozen in time while banished, could actually end up with the argument that Granny Smith is older than Luna)

I feel like we can blame the fandom portrayals of the Sisters for that one.

I'm hoping this turns into a Star Trek / TNG thing where we end up with nothing for several years and then Gen 5 comes around and blows Gen 4 out of the water. Gen 5 will never have the cultural impact that Gen 4 had - Gen 4 was lightning in a bottle - but Gen 5 has the possibility of being really fucking good if they don't screw it up. The show has a huge potential adult fanbase right out the gate, and if they're smart, the series will be planned around that.

There was a time that I was younger and really into anime, and several of the shows that I absolutely idolized between the ages of 15-25 are unwatchably bad to me now, despite having once been my favorite thing ever.

There's undeniable value in experience and the articulation of criticism. Beyond helping to improve things, it's often fun to analyze things. It only becomes a problem if that analysis starts to get in the way of appreciation for what good a work accomplishes. Now that you mention it, I remember thinking the music was mismatched to the battle, but it does create an interesting juxtaposition, and the solo animation is impressive so I kind of forgave that, and I manage to see it as exposition and denoument sung in rhythm to the climax of the same plot.

By the end of the series, I actively hated Celestia, and Luna hasn't been my favorite princess for years.

Well, this is what we got (and most of the people who were waiting years for a Celestia-centered episode). Luna kind of already was silly in her first centered episode but that was rather awkward kind of silliness so I can pass it. I think they portrayed them this way to once again show them as the very positive characters and friendly, totally not tyrannous rulers.

The item was fixed back in the flashback finale, when Luna gives her speech about the new Summer Sun Celebration.

Great movie. Love the orchestral music. Even more importantly, the story theme was handled smartly. I only winced a tiny bit at exaggerated characterizations and forced expositions/story elements, but those can be chalked up to writing for the target audience. I also wish that Sunny's victory in Bridlewood had more credibility, even if it had meant showing some less-subtle magic-ex-machina. I'm heartwarmed! (edited)

I feel it was better towards the beginning than the ending, the music and characters were great, however and overall not too much an issue in the plot with me. I'm curious at the ending of the credits cutscene if that will play part for G5 series, not sure.

It was not as good as I had hoped, but far better than my actual expectations.

The more I think about it, the more it seems any visible hint of magic before the climax might have been a contradiction to the premise of "there's no magic."

I might relate to Night Light, but we see only a bit of him. Even Sandbar and Gallus never really felt close to me, and Spike was mostly dom candy. I like that Hitch is strongly principled but persuadable with time and evidence, and despite a few comedic moments he never comes across as a caricature to me like Shining or Big Mac did. (edited)

Alpha Bittle is on the border of likeability to me. I'm not sure whether his motivation to bring Izzy back to the unicorn forest could be called fatherly since he claimed it was to avoiding jinxing them all, but his expression in that part seemed caring. Of course he, like all the mature representatives of the races, was forced to unite against the Sprout robot, but it didn't feel like it justified his turn from posturing at Sunny's group earlier to instead protecting the critters and such.

On the other hoof, Alpha Bittle seemed to get the importance of Sunny's mission finally, when he was forced to listen in the face of the queen standing up to him, so his change doesn't bother me. I just don't trust his character.

I've seen some criticism of Sunny's preaching without going herself to visit the other races first. It occurs to me that maybe Sunny didn't have other friends because she had tried getting her pseudo-friends and acquaintances to reach out to the other races with her. Part of her believed the danger of having her brains fried, so I'm not sure I can hold it against her that she, and even her dad, never put their necks on the line without some community support. It certainly says something about pony culture that their rewritten histories were so thoroughly believed by each race. I've been thinking maybe there were a few who explored "enemy territory" ahead of Sunny, but the unicorns and pegasi both put up a front like in the movie of having magic still. Even if a proper spy mission turned up information suggesting the other races didn't have magic, maybe that information was disregarded in favor of fear mongering, say during Phyllis Cloverleaf's foalhood. I don't know how long it would take for a fact like, "I never saw them use magic while undercover," to slip through the cracks and be written off as nonsense, but even a generation seems long enough, considering how easily manipulated and complacent ponies are.

On September 26th, the My Little Pony: Make Your Mark show (yes, the same name as the first special) will premiere exclusively on Netflix, in the movie's 3D style. It will consist of eight 22-minute episodes, though we don't know if they'll drop all at once or be spaced out.
On November 21st, the Winter Wishday 44-minute special will premiere exclusively on Netflix, in the movie's 3D style.
Also, all five of the G5 mane ponies have new voice actors.
Nothing has been specifically announced for 2023 yet (although Tell Your Tale might run that long), so this is probably all of the animated content they have planned just for 2022.

I think my problem with the CalArts thing isn't how it looks, rather it seems to be made for the sole purpose of not having the characters be too attractive like there are plenty of cartoons and anime that look similar to other series but that's because they genuinely find the artstyle pleasing to the eye CalArts is just easy and makes the characters less attractive so the SJW folks go for it so people don't lewd their characters

It's also easier to animate since the studios they hire in places like Korea or the Philippines are usually just sent the storyboard and key frames and they just fill in the rest

My issues with this CalArts isn't even that it looks bad. It's just that it's f**ng everywhere.

I loved chapter 4 of Make Your Mark. I still don't care much about Sparky as a character and the focus on him, while important I guess, also bores me, but at least he doesn't totally annoy me like he seems to do to many. It could have been due to low blood sugar, but I didn't really get into Bridlewoodstock beyond the character makeovers and other effects. The music didn't resonate with me, but I have a feeling I'll enjoy it all more my second time watching. Seeing backstories for certain characters was really cool, and seeing AlphaHaven play out and the girls' reactions was awesome as well. (edited)
